Day 10, Back in the U.S.

Today we crossed back into the U.S. and stopped in Eureka, Mt to do our laundry, dry out all our gear, do some minor maintenance, and to hit a restaurant.

Shortly after leaving Edward's Lake we ran into a convenience store on the main road and met a few other riders who were riding the entire Great Divide Route. One was a woman who brought her dog along with her. She said it was running alongside her for about 20 miles a day then riding in a trailer the rest of the time.



The other riders were a couple from Finland who were in their late 60s, which made me hopeful that I may have a few years of this kind of riding left in me.

Now that the weather has turned around we plan to do a couple of longer days to reach our endpoint in Whitefish. We have a couple of higher passes to go over, so it will be a bit more challenging riding.

Day 0, Hanging out in Banff

Dante, Kaden, and I are about to start another biking adventure This time we we be riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route from Banff to either Whitefish, Mt or Helena, Mt depending on how we are feeling after the first half. We don't plan to go fast or to cover any impressive distances each day, just to take our time and have fun. We plan to average 35 or so miles a day and to mostly camp out. Today we spent the day relaxing in Banff, doing some food shopping, and picking up some items we couldn't bring on the plane, like bear spray and camp stove fuel. Last Day, Tuchuck C.G. to Kalispell, Mt.

This ended up being the only long day of riding on this trip. About 20 miles into the day we had to tackle Red Meadow Pass, another challenging climb. It ends at a spectacular lake that makes it all worthwhile. After lunch there it was mostly downhill to our ending point of Whitefish, MT. Unfortunately, Whitefish is a very popular tourist area and all the campgrounds were full, as were almost all of the motels. I did find one room at $628/night, but decided that was just too offensive. So after eating in Whitefish we did another 15 miles to Kalispell, where rooms were available at almost reasonable prices. Our total mileage ended up being 78 miles. Dante and Kaden decided they had to get to 80, so after I headed into the motel they went out and did two more miles. Day 1, Rain, Rain, Rain, and a Flat Tire

Dante, Kaden, and I left Banff after a breakfast at Chili's. I would have preferred a non-chain, local restaurant but it was one of the earliest places to open and was right next to our hotel. It was a very cloudy but dry start. It didn't stay that way though. It started raining about an hour into our ride and didn't let up all day. The gorgeous scenery made up for it though. It was an intentionally short day, which we ended at Spray Lakes West Campground. Some pictures and video appear below. Crossing one of the bridges in Banff: At the end of a parking lot near the Banff Fairmont, where the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route leaves town: About 20 minutes into our ride we got our first, and hopefully only, flat. I wasn't paying attention and rolled over a 3 inch or so rock, causing a pinch flat. Of the 6 wheels we could get a flat on my rear wheel is the last one I would want. My newest bike has belt drive instead of a chain and I still don't have the rear wheel rein...
